Day of baking part 2

Church was cancelled yesterday because of the "blizzard of 09"
It was supposed to start around 11 in the afternoon on Saturday & go til around noon on Sunday.
We hurried home from NYC Saturday so we wouldn't be caught in it.
When we got home we waited... and waited... and waited for it to start.
Noon... no snow.
1:00... no snow.
2:00... no snow.
3:00... no snow.
you get the idea.
9:00 FINALLY it started snowing & it started snowing HARD.
I think we ended up getting around 10-12".
I thought we would get more... esp since we got a phone call from Homeland Security warning us about this storm & advising us on how to "stay safe" during it... seriously!
Come Sunday morning I was debating... get out of bed & start dressing all 4 kids & chance getting the phone call of cancellation right when i get the last shoe on?
Or just stay in bed & HOPE that the call comes before it is too late to try & make it somewhat on time if the call doesn't come.
Sure enough, at the very last second I could possibly feel good about delaying... I got an email... "Church is cancelled. Have a nice day with your family."

So i decided we would do something we NEVER do...
BAKE
especially as a family.

I don't know why I hate baking.
I don't know why i suck at it. And i truly mean SUCK in all it's glory at it!
I do not have a "kitchen doing stuff" bone in my body.
I have tried... I do try... I want to be successful...
I just suck at it!
No word says it better!
And today was no different.

Ask Steve... I honestly went in with a positive attitude.
I allowed the kids to help.
We were going to have a good time.
I even had the iPods & radios in the kitchen all set to 99.9 (the Christmas music station) so we could pretend we were listening to a fancy schmancy surround sound system as we worked!

Disaster #1:
The caramel corn.
For some reason the caramel is just not the right consistency this year.
I consider the caramel corn to be ONE thing i can do right.
This is the 2nd time this Christmas I have made it & the 2nd time it did NOT turn out right.
It is also the 2nd thermometer I have had because i dropped the 1st in to the batch of caramel as it was boiling.
Also, i needed my large bowl to do the next batch, so i poured the hot, gooey corn out onto wax paper.
Now, i thought the whole purpose of wax paper was so things WOULDN'T stick to it.
WRONG.
After it cooled i went to take it off & it was all STUCK to it.
So i got to spend the next 1/2 hour, peeling little bits of stuck wax paper off the bottom layer of the caramel corn.
The kids wanted to ice sugar cookies.
So bring on disaster #2.
I KNEW me making sugar cookies & trying to ice them would be a disaster so i TRIED to avoid as many problems as possible.
So i bought the premade dough.
Simple, right?
NO!
Rolling it out...
Molly ruined 1 batch.
The phone rang, I went to answer it.
At the time there was NO ONE in the kitchen.
I came back in, all 3 kids were in the kitchen, Molly on the counter.
She had pounded a good inch of flour onto the top of the dough (& her legs)... she use about 1/2 a bag of flour. I tried to save it, but no luck!
Into the garbage that went!
Max wanted to help.
At first i thought he was doing a good job at cutting out circles...
Then he just started doing these random circles everywhere.
We went from baking to an art project in the blink of an eye.
My gingerbread boys came out of the oven looking like the marshmallow guy from Ghostbusters.
And Ben put his fingers in them right as they came out of the oven.
Max when he WAS being helpful!
We never did get around to icing them.
I forgot to buy icing & i wasn't about to look up a recipe for icing at attempt to make my own.
NO WAY!

Disaster #3:
And blogger didn't upload the photo.
Max found these cute bags he wanted to give all of his teachers & "teacher friends" at school.
So we were going to fill them with "turtles".
So i spent 1/2 an hour with the kids unrolling bags & bags of Rollos.
Then we made trays & trays of the stupid things.
Just as the last tray came out I thought "hummm, let me read the back of the pretzel bag just to make sure there aren't any "nut" ingredients in these".
We are a nut free school.
And sure enough... right there... "This product is manufactured in a plant with peanut butter".
Well holy crap!
Now what am i going to do with 10 dozen turtles... AND no treats for the teachers... AND Max is beyond ticked off cause he has nothing for his little bags!

Success #1:
But i did have a success.
Every year i make reindeer food for the kids.
Ben finally outgrew it this year.
Got the tag template online & just added my own details.
(The kid font is Ben's actual handwriting from 1st grade, i had made into a computer font)
If i could only be 1/2 as successful with flour & water as i were with paper & scissors =)

13th anniversary in NYC--- with the kids

Most years we don't do anything too terribly exciting for our anniversary.
It's usually just dinner & a movie.
On occasion we will go into the city for a show... but rarely.
A few days ago, I realized our anniversary was coming up & we hadn't talked about what we were going to do... so i suggested to Steve that we book a room in NYC for the night.
He asked if we should be "romantic" & just the 2 of us go. Or if we should take the kids.
Well, we aren't the romantic type & the kids (M&M) had never been. And Ben had never been during Christmas time. So, we decided to take the kids.

We decided to take the kids out of school early on Friday 11:15 & catch the 12:12 train into Grand Central. We didn't think the train would be crowded... #1 it was friday in the middle of the day. #2 schools weren't out yet for break. #3 we were expecting a HUGE winter storm this weekend. So we didn't get to sit together on the train & I didn't get many pictures.
When the conductor came by to punch our tickets I had to take our tickets back from Max, cause they were also our return tickets. (BTW... I didn't realize how cheap it was to take the whole family. $51 for all 5 of us. M&M were free. Ben was $.75. Steve & I were $25 something each! WOW!)... So anyways, Max was a little upset he didn't get to hold a ticket. So he asked the conductor "is this the Polar Express & are we going to the North Pole?". The conductor giggled & punched Max a special ticket & gave it to him.
We finally arrived at Grand Central at 1:40.
Ben & Max was prettin impressed.
The leashes were such a brilliant idea. I remembered at the last minute to go to target to get these. The kids LOVED them & they saved us MUCH stress. We did get a few looks. But we also got a lot of "ohhh, how cute & wow, what a great idea!"
Our overpriced suite.
Le Parker Meridian

They even had a PET room service menu
Everyone taking a time out.
Lunch at dad's FAVORITE deli... The famous CARNEGIE DELI
You would have thought a plate of gold had been set down the way they attacked those pickles.
They were so impressed with my Roast Beef sandwich UNTIL they saw....
Steves pastrami sandwich.
1/2 of it was the size of his hand.
The kids were impressed he could get it in his mouth & that he ate ALMOST all of it.
And we finished it off by sharing a slice of NY strawberry cheesecake
After a NICE NAP =)
We bundled up... it was SOOOOOO FREEZING COOOOOOOLDDDDD...
We walked down to see the Christmas Tree.
This year the tree came from Easton, CT.

They loved the ice skaters.
They wanted to skate so bad.
I promised at some point we would come back to skate =P
Saks was cool. The stars would dance to music.

Cartiers wrapped up like a big package.
St Patricks Cathedrial
They wanted to go inside, so we took them in.
Once we got past the holy water, we did much better.
It was hard to explain to Max that he couldn't play in it.

Oh & then the candles.
Max wanted to blow them out!
Thankfully he didn't!
And the manger scene.
The kids didn't like that the baby Jesus was missing!
They bring him in later, i'm assuming at Midnight Mass.
Back at the room getting ready for bed, Molly discovered the shower cap.
She wanted to play "lunch lady"
While Max chomped on his pickle from early in the day
Steve decided he didn't want dinner.
He just wanted dessert.
So he asked the doorman at Cartiers where to go.
He suggested "Crumbs" to get a cupcake.
They were the most beautiful cupcakes ever.... except they were all 500+ calories.
I just couldn't justify that... so i didn't get one.
Instead I got a jamba juice smoothy & a flatbread (both of which were less calories than 1 cupcake).
But the kids just licked the icing off the tops of their cupcakes.
And there they were... yelling me, being wasted, looking at me.
And i gave in...
I ATE THEM!
Saturday morning the kids kind of slept in... well til 7:30.
I forgot to turn the alarm off on my phone!
Got everyone up & dressed.
The view from our room.
We were supposed to be on the 22nd floor.
But Steve doesn't like upper floors, so we got moved to the 5th floor... and got to look into Air France & a gym's windows =(

The tree in our lobby
We went down & had breakfast in the lobby at Nora's.
It is supposed to be one of the BEST breakfast places in NY.
It was def one of the MOST expensive places in NY.
We did NOT know that when we started out there.
That little shot glass of smoothy Molly is holding... well, we thought those were complimentary... the way it was presented to us, we thought it was.
Well, it wasn't.
And the kids kept asking for more!

1 $hot gla$$ of $moothie
another $hot gla$$ of $moothie
5 $hot gla$$e$ of $moothie$
Can you guess what we did NOT have for breakfast???
Maybe the $1000 Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata
Yes, one THOUSAND dollars!!!
Yup another $hot gla$$ of $moothie!
After breakfast we walked to FAO Schwarz
Max didn't want to have his picture taken with the guards. The guard said he wouldn't bite. After the picture the guard said lets take another picture & he pretended to bite. He kept asking to take more pictures. These guys were fun!
Then the big piano from the movie "BIG".
We watched them perform & then the kids got to play.
You can have a doll made to match yourself.
Then you get to go & adopt it.
Ben & Max liked that.
$139 EACH for Bella & Edward.
That's what I asked for for Christmas =P
That's my motto!
Then the BEST part...
The Apple store.
Believe it or not, this is the store the kids BEGGED to go into!
It's ALL glass!
They liked this MORE than FAO!

Apple store with the Plaza Hotel
We rode the glass elevator down, walked around, then rode the glass elevator back up.
Plaza Hotel
Lobby of the Plaza Hotel
Christmas Tree in the Plaza Hotel
A big storm was supposed to be hitting around 11am (its now 9:30 pm & it's just starting). And Molly was not enjoying this trip. So we decided to pack it in around noon to come home.

When we got home we had lunch at the kids favorite Thai place

Yup.. maturity there.

It was a fast trip... it was cold... Molly was cranky... but all in all it was a lot of fun. I think the kids had a lot of fun too!
Thanks daddy for a fun little adventure!

Princess and the Frot

When we were at Disney, we got 2 FREE passes to see "The Princess and the Frog".
Can't turn down free movie passes, but i honestly had no desire to see it.
Max also didn't want to see it!
So this morning Steve took Ben & Molly.
Steve said he was really dreading it, but it actually turned out to be pretty good!
Ben also liked it... Molly didn't like it until Steve got her popcorn... then she liked it.

Hanukkah Gift...

Rachella sent Crue & I a surprise Hanukkah gift for us to open together.
I knew it was a gag gift, but I didn't know what it was... but I knew I needed to capture it in photos!

Oh, the horror! She just can't stand it! "I think i'm going to be sick"
Yup, she got sick...
Right in the box! EWWW!!!
Nope, that didn't make her feel any better about the gift of horror that was waiting for her in the box.
What could POSSIBLY be so horrible in that box?
.
.
.
.
.
Why it was CHEAP BLING!!!
Crue HATES cheap bling!
I on the other hand LOVE it... the cheaper & gaudier the BETTER!
She could hardly touch it... it was "itching" her, just holding it =)
Thanks Rachella!
That was FUN! I really DO love my PINK Texas Longhorn Bling bracelet.
Crue on the other hand, well... all I can say is I feel VERY sorry for her husband! She is VERY hard to please!

Do you like it?

Ben did his own hair tonight...
he wants to know if anyone likes it!

1st night of Hanukkah

Tonight is the 1st Night of Hanukkah!
Steve is Jewish & we have/read lots of Jewish stories & history books.
We also have several menorah's in the house... 1 real & several the kids made while attending the Jewish Pre-school.
But we have never used them & the kids have always asked how they work & what they are all about.
So this year, Steve decided to actually attempt to light one.
After lots of tears over who would actually get to light it... Max won.
Then I blew it out... and got yelled at.
I didn't think it was safe to have it lit, they are wobbly little candles... but Steve informed me that you do NOT blow out the Hanukkah candles.
So, that solved the tears issue & Molly was allowed to re-light the 1st night candles.
Hopefully we will (safely) make it thru all 8 nights of Hanukkah!

Max lighting the "slave" candle.
The 1st night/candle lit!

HoHo & the firetruck

We got a phone call from an elf tonight telling us to get our shoes & coats on (it was the coldest night we have had so far, 8 with the windchill). Cause at 6pm we were going to have a special surprise.
So everyone gathered around the door waiting to see what was going to happen!
Then this arrived!!!
HoHo on this "lightly" decorated fire truck!
The best part was Max's fire fighting hero Steve was able to ride along with the captain, cause he "knows HoHo"!
That was extra awesome for Max!
(Max loves any & everything fire related! And Firefighter Steve gave Max a personal tour of "his" fire station this summer.)
And of course the kids all got to see HoHo & he gave them all gifts!
Do they look overly thrilled with their new roller skates?
Well, they were!!!
They LOVE them!
Molly is actually doing the best on them.
Max can hardly keep himself upright, but he will have it down in a day or 2... he won't give up.
The funniest part... I bought these skates for the kids last Christmas "from Santa". They opened them & had no interest in them. They played with them for 10 minutes. So i boxed them back up & put them away. I needed something for Santa to give them tonight, so I re-wraped them & Santa handed them out tonight. This year, they were a HUGE hit. The best part... they totally don't remember getting them last year or seeing them sitting in the basement for the past year!
Now that is RECYCLING at it's best!

is santa real?

Conversation Ben & I just had...

B: Is Santa Claus real?
M; What do you think?
... long pause & I just look at him...
B: That is your lying face mom.
B: Ok, fine, he's real... but when I grow up you better watch out.
M: Why?
B: Well, if he is real, i'll owe you an apology.
B: But if he isn't real, you will owe me an apology.
M: Ok... deal!

Suz's surgery

This is mostly just to embarrass Suz.
But i know it really won't!
And also, cause Ben thinks these pics are just super cool!

I think it sucks that she can look so cute, even after being prepped for surgery!
She's happy.
She's got the pre-drug drugs in her!
Making sure she even has a brain before they start the cervical fusion.
I personally think she should start wearing the cute little alien twist knots as a fashion statement!
She could def pull it off!

day of baking... yes, i baked!

... and i HATED it!

Got my candy made for the candy/cookie exchange for tomorrow night!
Max said "they look like "B-canos" getting ready to "E-wooft"". Basically max talk for "volcanos" & "erupt"!
Thankfully they are done.
Very simple, but i wanted it that way... since they are being exchanged, i wanted something i knew i wouldn't ruin or make anyone sick =P
My 1st batch of caramel corn is DONE!
This is my FAVORITE holiday treat.
I only make it once a year... cause it is highly addicting & i could eat it all.
Infact, my favorite thing is to leave a little bit of the caramel in the pan & just spoon it out & eat it.
I'd make just a batch of caramel & eat just that, but that would be really bad =)
And an early Christmas gift to me... The "As seen on TV Perfect Brownie Pan set".
And they did come out PERFECT!
Now i remember why i hate baking & only do it once a year.
The Phone was ringing off the hook.
All 3 kids wanted to help.
Max was smashing the popcorn into itty bitty bits.
Brownies needed to come out of the oven.
Molly was screaming for food.
I dropped the candy thermometer into the bottom of the boiling caramel.
And so on...
All while trying to keep the caramel from burning!
AARGH!
